Chapter Sixteen

PIERCE

“You do realise Thanksgiving is usually celebrated on a Thursday, right?” Peering over Ellie's shoulder, I watch as she continues making dinner with Mum.

“Yes, thank you. But this was the only time your parents could make it, and I wanted to do it before the baby comes, so hush.” She shoos me out of the kitchen, but not before I grab another beer.

“Pierce. Have I taught you nothing? Stay out of the kitchen while your mum is cooking.” Dad shakes his head at me as I sit beside him in the living room. Ellie told Mum she wanted to learn how to cook a proper Thanksgiving meal, and that none of our input was needed. With an American mum, we grew up celebrating because it’s her favourite holiday.

“I wasn't commenting on her cooking skills. I'm not that dumb.” I take a long pull on my beer as Charlotte bursts through the front door. Charlotte’s coming today? I don’t know if I’m prepared to be in the same room as her and not want to touch her.

“I'm not late, am I?” Her cheeks are pink as she shrugs out of her heavy coat. Christ, does she look beautiful in leggings that hug every curve and a cream sweater that hangs off one shoulder. Her lips are painted a bright red. It takes everything I have not to sweep her up into my arms and kiss that lipstick right off her.

“I'm so happy you could make it!” Ellie comes out of the kitchen, wrapping her arms around Charlotte as best she can. “Better than the rest of the family who couldn't make it.”

“I don't think I've ever been to a Thanksgiving dinner before. Anything I can help with?” She gives me a shy look, before following Ellie into the kitchen.

“Are you listening to me?” Sean is giving me a strange look.

“Sorry, what were you saying?” I take another sip of my beer, trying to cool down. Anytime Charlotte is near, I can feel the heat coursing through me. I love what she does to me, but I hate that we have to act like we hardly know each other.

“Did you finish that piece you were working on yesterday?”

I nod my head. “Yup. Definitely not my favourite, but it's what they wanted.”

“What'd they want?” Dad asks, attention still focused on the TV.

“It was a bear attacking a lion. Why people want what they want is beyond me,” I say, shaking my head. “It was to cover up an old quote on their back.”

“I'm sure it was the best bear attacking a lion out there.” God love our dad. He's brilliant but doesn’t always understand what we do.

“Dinner's ready!” Ellie calls from the kitchen.

The table is set for a feast. Turkey, potatoes of all kinds, rolls, corn. You name it, Ellie cooked it.

“Is Thanksgiving dinner always this much of a to-do?” Charlotte asks, carrying the turkey out.

“In our family it is,” Mum answers. “It was my favourite holiday growing up, so I made sure to continue the tradition with our kids.
